After 14 years at the top of the global cell phone sales chart, Nokia is ceding the lead position to Samsung, says market research firm [IHS iSuppli](http://www.isuppli.com/Mobile-and-Wireless-Communications/News/Pages/Samsung-Displaces-Nokia-as-Top-CellphoneBrand-in-2012-and-Takes-Decisive-Smartphone-Lead-Over-Apple.aspx).

Samsung roared to the top in 2012, moving from a 24 percent share in 2011 to an estimated 29 percent last year. Nokia fell from 30 percent to 24 percent in 2012. In third place is Apple, with 10 percent of the worldwide cell phone sales market. IHS iSuppli analysts cite Samsung's aggressive actions in introducing popular and new smart phones and Nokia's problems in doing likewise as the reason for the rapid turnaround in the standings.

As a result of a jump of 36 percent in sales in 2012, smart phones now represent 47 percent of the global mobile phone market. In global smart phone sales in 2012, Samsung had a 29-percent share while Apple represented 20 percent of the market. Nokia, HTC and Blackberry each had a 5-percent share. Samsung improved nine percentage points in 2012, while Apple rose just one point.
