**Nancy Judd**, the driving force behind the trash-to-fashion art project [Recycle Runway](http://recyclerunway.com/) that was [profiled in _Resource Recycling_](http://www.resource-recycling.com/images/Thomas0512rr.pdf), will bring her art on traveling exhibition called **"ReDress: Upcycled Style"** to **museums across the country**. Each museum will show her work for about three months beginning with the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts at the Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida.
**Maryland** Democratic House member Maggie McIntosh says she and fellow House members will **propose a nickel refundable deposit on beverage containers**. McIntosh chairs the House Environmental Matters Committee. Local retailers would not be required to redeem the bottles. Instead, the recovery system would rely on a chain of redemption centers.
The so-called **fiscal cliff tax measure** approved by Congress in the first hours of the New Year includes an extension of an enhanced corporate deduction (found in IRS Section 170-e) for **contributions of food inventory**.
**Owens-Illinois** has received an $805,000 government grant to help pay for part of the cost of upgrading its **Waco, Texas** glass container manufacturing plant. The company is spending $74 million to improve the facility, including boosting production and adding 70 workers.
**The Ford Core Recovery Program**, a recycling program run by motor giant Ford, has kept **120 million pounds of damaged vehicle parts out of landfills** since it was launched a decade ago. The program facilitates the collection, remanufacturing and recycling of damaged parts, ranging from small sensors and fuel injectors to large engine parts.
The **U.S. Environmental Protection Agency** has awarded nearly **$50,000** to two Puerto Rican organizations, Leaders of the World and the Scuba Dogs Society, **to educate low-income communities about effective waste management**, recycling and the negative effects of improper waste disposal on people's health and water quality. The grant was awarded under the EPA's Environmental Justice Small Grants Program, which supports communities working on solutions to local environmental and public health issues.
Local authorities in **England recycled, composted or reused nearly 12 million tons of waste**, while sending 10.5 million tons to the landfill over the last year, reports [_The Telegraph_](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/9773055/Householders-forced-to-recycle-more-because-councils-abandon-weekly-collections.html) citing figures from the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Analyzing data, the paper found that the 10 councils that had the biggest increases in recycling had begun **every-other-week refuse collection** during the past two years.
During the 60 seconds it took for the **Times Square Ball** to drop on New Year's Eve, **Americans wasted 300,000 beverage containers** that collectively weigh more than three Times Square Balls put together, according to figures from the [Container Recycling Institute](http://www.container-recycling.org/).
In order to save landfill space, **Sioux Falls, South Dakota** will begin taking **mattresses and box springs** from residents for $7 a pop for recycling, reports [_Keloland Television_](http://www.keloland.com/newsdetail.cfm/sioux-falls-to-recycle-mattresses/?id=141416).
With the holidays winding down, you might find yourself with lots and **lots of wrapping paper**. Just how many times can that paper be recycled? Soundview Paper (formerly Marcal) has purchased **Putney Paper**, the producer of recycled tissue and toweling products sold in the away-from-home market. Putney Paper operates a 35,000-ton-per-year mill in Putney, Vermont
**Waste Management** suffered a huge fire at one of the firm's recycling plants in Houston. Some 175 fire fighters worked to quell the three-alarm blaze.
The **consumption of recovered paper** in the U.S. in November, at 2.36 million tons, was 5 percent lower than October's total. The American Forest and Paper Association notes that year-to-date recovered paper usage through November was off 4 percent.
