A new study points to widespread underutilized recycling potential for used LDPE generated on farms in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island -- and the findings could be applied to other agrarian states or provinces.
Prepared by 2cg Waste Management Consulting Services and commissioned through a partnership between the Canadian Plastics Industry Association, CleanFARMS, and the Nova Scotia Resource Recovery Fund Board, [the study](http://www.cleanfarms.ca/sites/default/files/studies/CleanFARMSReportMaritimes_FINAL_includesAppendixes_20121212.pdf) found that very little of the 3,748 tons of waste plastic generated by farms annually in the provinces was recycled – with 70 percent of the waste plastic being LDPE bale film, silage wrap, fertilizer or feed bags and other items.
The waste characterization study outlines the types and volumes of a range of agricultural products, as well as points out that, of the three provinces in the study, only Prince Edward Island has any type of agricultural plastic recycling or reuse programs – and those are currently all pilot projects. According to CleanFARMS, the goal is to use the data to help develop stewardship programs for the provinces.
