## King County takes back mattresses

It is now easier to manage end-of-life mattresses in Washington state's largest county, thanks to an expansion of a take-back program.
King County's [Take it Back Network](http://your.kingcounty.gov/solidwaste/takeitback/index.asp), a partnership between the county and participating repair shops, retailer establishments, nonprofit organizations, recyclers and waste haulers, seeks to provide convenient recycling options for hard-to-recycle products for area residents. The network, which previously covered scrap electronics and fluorescent bulbs and tubes, now has two locations that will take back mattresses, either via drop-off or by scheduled pick-up of their unwanted mattresses. There is a fee to cover processing costs.
According to King County's Solid Waste Division, in 2011, the county received approximately 90,000 mattresses for disposal -- weighing more than 3,000 tons -- at its transfer stations and landfills.
According to the network, program participants must meet stringent guidelines for the recycling and handling of products and comply with all local, state and federal regulations and international trade laws.
