## Input sought on plastic shredder scrap

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is seeking public comment on an interpretation of its regulation that would allow plastic scrap separated from shredder residue to be recycled under certain conditions.
Currently, the EPA is seeking comment on an interpretation of the Voluntary Procedures for Recycling Plastics from Shredder Residue, which relies principally on the regulatory provisions for polychlorinated biphenyls products. According to a [notice](http://www.regulations.gov/#!documentDetail;D=EPA-HQ-OPPT-2012-0902-0001) posted by the EPA, the agency was approached by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, Inc. last year about the separation, recycling, use and distribution of recycled plastics from shredder residue from metals recycling facility.
The notice states that ISRI argued that resolving regulatory uncertainty over the recovery and recycling of plastics from metal shredding facilities would increase investments in the activity, lead to more innovative methods to separate the material and produce environmental benefits.
ISRI highlights several plastics as likely candidates for recycling, including PP, HDPE, ABS, HIPS and PU foam.
