## RoHS expands to include more products

The European Union's latest [revision](http://www.electronicsnews.com.au/news/new-rohs-requirements-for-electronics-exporters-to) of its Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (RoHS) went into effect earlier this month, expanding the scope of the standard to include common household appliances.
RoHS Recast expands the scope of the limitations on potentially hazardous substances used in electronic and electrical devices to include equipment such as ovens, lawnmowers and anything with an electrical ignition unit. Photovoltaic panels are exempt.
RoHS mandates that all covered electronic and electrical products sold in the EU must either exclude or not exceed maximum limits for a range of substances, including lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBBs, PBDEs and other substances.
Other products, such as medical devices and industrial process control equipment, are scheduled to be phased in beginning in 2014.
