Resource Recycling Magazine: Game Day Challenge kicks off for 2012

## Game Day Challenge kicks off for 2012

_By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling_

As college football fans across the country ramp up for another season, the annual Game Day Challenge is launching a another competition to see which school can reduce, reuse and recycle the most waste.

The [Game Day Challenge](http://www.epa.gov/epawaste/partnerships/wastewise/challenge/gameday/index.htm) competition is open to any college or university in the U.S. that has a football team. Each participating school will be challenged to design a waste reduction plan for one 2012 regular-season home football game of its choosing, with each diversion strategy involving recovering paper, beverage containers and cardboard, along with collecting food for donation or composting. The results of each plan will be used to determine winners in seven categories, including: least amount of waste generated per attendee; highest per capita recycling; and highest combined recycling and composting rate. The national champion will be announced in December. Last year, 75 participating schools kept almost 500,000 pounds of game-day waste out of landfills.

The 2012 Game Day Challenge will be administered by the College & University Recycling Coalition (CURC), Keep America Beautiful (KAB) and the RecycleMania, Inc., with support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
