E-Scrap News Magazine: Asset disposition options underdeveloped for most companies

## Asset disposition options underdeveloped for most companies

A third of U.S. businesses fail to use proper electronics recycling or disposal practices, according to new findings from International Data Corp.

IT hardware disposition does not have a home in many companies, falling outside the responsibility for both IT departments and procurement departments, according to [_IT Asset Disposal and Recycling: United States Enterprise Practices and Outlook 2012-2013_](http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS23690312). Additionally, when companies do implement IT asset disposition strategies, they tend to be focused first on data security, with electronics recycling as an afterthought.

While environmental concerns had previously been cited as a major reason for pursuing an IT management strategy when companies were polled between 2003 and 2008, in the wake of the recession, priorities have shifted to regulatory compliance and cost-containment.
