## Rigid packaging demand rising
_By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling_
Worldwide demand for rigid packaging is forecast to increase 6.4 percent per year, reaching a total value of $472 billion by 2016, according to a recent study.
"[_World Rigid Packaging to 2016_][1]" is a new study from the Freedonia Group that predicts a steady rise in the market for rigid packaging. The study attributes the rising demand of the materials to global manufacturing output, increased consumer spending on packaged goods worldwide, as well as demographic trends, such as increasing urban populations, which consume more packaged goods per capita than their rural counterparts. In particular, China will account for a large share of the growth in this sector, making up 46 percent of all global value gains. India and Indonesia will also see significant jumps. Too, Brazil, Turkey, Russia and Mexico will register healthy increases.
The report also predicts a demand, stemming from environmental concerns, for flexible packaging products, and, as a result, gains in rigid packaging will lag growth in total packaging demand. Other factors limiting rigid packaging demand include market maturity in developed countries, as well as market saturation in bedrock applications such as bottled and canned beers and carbonated soft drinks.
