A local government in Ontario is considering launching a pilot program that would allow residents to leave their old electronics on the curb for pick up for recycling.

The Niagara Regional Council is currently considering a three-month pilot project that would involve the regional government picking up old electronics at the curbside when the service is requested in advance by residents, reports [_The Welland Tribune_][1].

The proposed pilot project, which has the approval of the council's public works committee, would allow the regional government to determine if an ongoing program could work fiscally. Initially, it would cost the government $60,000 ($Cn), according to the paper.

A fully-implemented program could cost $200,000, but also bring in $202,000 in revenue from the Ontario Electronic Stewardship, the organization that oversees the producer responsibility requirements for makers of electronics, according to the paper. Additionally, the program is expected to keep 375 tons of material out of landfills.

The paper quoted one official who expressed concern that the program could affect nonprofit organizations that generate revenue from e-scrap collection. Another worried that the program would attract scavengers.
