Resource Recycling Magazine: Time to fill out your RecycleMania bracket

## Time to fill out your RecycleMania bracket

_By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling_

As the NCAA basketball tournament returns, so will RecycleMania, the competition that runs alongside the college sporting event and looks to boost recycling rates at college campuses.

Running through March 30, 523 schools representing 47 states, the District of Columbia and Canada will compete in nine categories to see which college can recycle the most on a per-capita basis, which produces the least amount of waste and which recycles the largest percentage of their overall waste stream.

As part of the competition, schools submit weight data for paper, cardboard, cans, bottles and food scraps collected along with trash generation each week. The results are measured up against each other, and the results are available throughout the competition. The competition also has two new categories this year. In the first -- Game Day: Basketball -- schools are challenged to increase recycling and reduce waste generation at a single home basketball game. The second new category targets film plastics, seeking to call attention to the recyclability of items such as dry cleaning bags, shrink wrap and shopping bags.

Last year, 605 colleges and universities collected over 92 million pounds of recyclables and compostable organics. For more information, visit [www.recyclemaniacs.org](http://www.recyclemaniacs.org/).
