## Texas collects nearly 44 million pounds of e-scrap

In Texas, computer manufacturers have [reported](http://www.tceq.state.tx.us/assets/public/assistance/P2Recycle/electronics/RY2012Summary.pdf) they collected more than 43.8 million pounds of electronics last year.
Computer manufacturers are required by law to operate a take-back program for their products in the state. These companies can also voluntarily collect televisions, monitors and other electronics for recycling, which they can report to the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality, the entity that oversees the state's e-scrap law.
Currently, 90 manufacturers representing 133 brands participate in the program. In 2012, manufacturers hit a new milestone for the program by collecting more than 24 million pounds of covered computer equipment. Of that weight, more than 20 million pounds were recycled and 3.7 million pounds were reused. Because some companies that collect e-scrap do not have to report to the commission, the agency's numbers may not present a full picture of electronics recycling in Texas.
