## Export watch

The volume of plastic scrap exported in August, at 390.78 million pounds, jumped by 13.6 percent from its July figure. However, when matched against its August 2011 position, the volume of exports was down by a steep 13.3 percent.

The weighted price of recovered plastic exports in August, at 20.90 cents per pound, was nearly flat, with just a 0.7 percent increase from its July 2012 standing. However, when compared to its year-over-year (YOY) level the price was down sharply by 20.2 percent.

Through August, at 2.92 billion pounds, the volume of recovered plastics exported was down 7.3 percent through the same period in 2011. At 21.31 cents per pound, the average price through August 2012 was down, as well, by 9.5 percent from its 2011 year-to-date (YTD) standing.

As for other exported materials, recovered paper exports YTD experienced a 6.5 percent YOY decrease, to 13.19 million metric tons. At $172 per metric ton, the weighted average price of exported recovered paper in August was down 4.4 percent when compared to its August 2011 mark.

Regarding ferrous scrap, the 15.29 million metric tons exported through August resulted in a 9.16 percent YOY decrease. At $449 per metric ton the weighted average price of exported ferrous scrap was also down, by 3.9 percent.

Lastly, the 3.09 billion pounds of aluminum scrap exported through August equated to a small 1.1 percent YOY decrease. And, at 78 cents per pound, the average price of exported aluminum scrap in August was down 10.3 percent when compared to its August 2011 standing.
