**Disney** has announced a **new paper sourcing and use** [policy](http://thewaltdisneycompany.com/citizenship/policies/paper-sourcing) that aims to maximize recycled content and fiber in paper used in the company's day-to-day operations.

**The Can Manufacturers Institute**, a trade association representing can makers and their suppliers, has announced the **Third Annual Great American Can Roundup School Challenge**, a competition that will challenge schools across the country to see which can recycle the most cans per capita. The winner of the competition, which kicks off on Nov. 15 in conjunction with **America Recycles Day**, will bag **$5,000**. **Virginia recycled 43.5 percent of its municipal and other solid wastes in 2011**, up from the previous year's rate of 40.5 percent, according to a [report](http://www.deq.virginia.gov/Portals/0/DEQ/Land/RecyclingPrograms/Reports/2011Recycling_Rate_Report.pdf) from the commonwealth's Department of Environmental Quality.

A **two-alarm fire at Eagle Recycling in North Bergen, New Jersey** earlier this week lead local officials to shut down the facility and slap its owners with a **$100,000 fine**, reports [_The Jersey Journal_](http://www.nj.com/jjournal-news/index.ssf/2012/10/eagle_recycling_shut_down_fine.html). According to the paper, the facility has been a chronic nuisance to its neighbors and has been cited in the past for illegal dumping and fire and safety hazards.
