The **American Chemistry Council's Plastics Division is accepting nominations for the annual Innovation in Plastics Recycling Awards**. The awards recognize companies and individuals moving plastics recycling forward with new ideas, products and technologies. Nominations are due by Oct. 30. The Riyadh, Saudi Arabia-based King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology has filed Patent Application No. 20120258298, which describes **a method of creating plastic insulation from mixed PET, PS and HDPE materials**.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory of Washington, D.C. has [developed](http://www.fastcoexist.com/1680691/genetically-engineered-bacteria-become-the-worlds-most-efficient-plastic-factory?utm_source=twitter) a new type of **bacteria that uses photosynthesis to process carbon dioxide from the air into ethylene that can be used in plastics production**. The organism, named Synechocystis, can produce 170 milligrams of ethylene per liter per day.

Levi's has announced a [new line](http://www.packagingdigest.com/article/522599-8_Bottles_1_Jean_Levi_s_introduces_Waste_denim_collection.php) of **jeans made from 20 percent recycled PET**. Each pair contains the equivalent of approximately a dozen plastic bottles, and the new line of jeans will go on sale early next spring.
