Plastics Recycling Update Magazine: HPRC, Stanford announce pilot diversion project

## HPRC, Stanford announce pilot diversion project

_By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling_

The Healthcare Plastics Recycling Council has partnered with Stanford University Medical Center to launch a [six-month pilot program][1] to better understand plastic waste generation at healthcare facilities.

The goal of the pilot is to identify barriers and challenges that exist to recycling mixed plastics generated at hospitals and use that data to inform the design of a plastic waste diversion program. Material type, volume and sources of plastic will all be measured and used in conjunction with HPRC's value-chain mapping and design for recycling guidelines to form recommendations. Previous HPRC pilot projects in medical facilities collected and processed over 20,000 pounds of material.

The HPRC, with a membership that includes DuPont, Eastman, Johnson & Johnson, Waste Management, and others, was formed to encourage a more comprehensive approach to plastics management in healthcare facilities, from product design to a product's end-of-life.
