E-Scrap News Magazine: BAN to spin-off e-Stewards

## BAN to spin-off e-Stewards

The Basel Action Network has announced that it's taking the first steps to hand over the administration of the e-Stewards certification to another organization.

The Seattle-based non-profit organization has put out a [request for qualifications][1] seeking a for-profit or non-profit entity to independently run its e-Stewards certification program. BAN says it is undertaking the move so that it can better focus on its core mission of fighting toxic trade, while pursing new initiatives.

"We have launched a program to identify and certify the good guys," said Jim Puckett, executive director of BAN, in a prepared statement. "We will now turn our attention to ensuring that every U.S. consumer and company demands that their e-waste is only handled by the recycling industry's great leaders and not the great pretenders."

The announcement has garnered widespread support from the electronics recycling industry, with proponents of the e-Stewards certification saying the move will help the certification grow and expand. Even rivals, such as the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries, issued statements largely in support of the announcement, praising the industry's move toward greater transparency and accountability.

Submissions to the RFQ are due by July 15, with BAN saying it plans on making a decision by September 1.
