The Ag Container Recycling Council has released new collection figures, showing members collected over 8 million pounds of pesticide containers for recycling in 2011, up 1.8 percent from the previous year.

Since 1992, over 125 million pounds of pesticide container have been collected and recycled as a result of the funding and support of ACRC member companies. For both 2010 and 2011, the weight of the containers collected for recycling exceeded 8 million pounds.

California again led the nation in 2011 for the amount collected, with a record setting 1,706,771 pounds of pesticide containers recycled. The Golden State's total now exceeds 20.5 million pounds. Mississippi, Washington, Texas and Oregon rounded out the top five states recycling the most containers in 2011. Of the 42 states that participate in the ACRC program, 20 reported increases and 22 reported decreases in total pounds recycled in 2011 compared with 2010. Significant increases (greater than 50 percent) were reported for Kansas, Mississippi, New York, South Carolina, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
