## Groups urge tougher WEEE reporting

A third of Euope's WEEE scrap is going unreported, according to a new [joint report](http://www.eera-recyclers.com/sites/default/files/Guidance document on measuring all WEEE flows and establishing WEEE treatment standards.pdf) from the European Electronics Recyclers Association, DIGITALEUROPE and LightingEurope.
What's needed, says the report, are tougher reporting requirements for all permitted WEEE recycling organizations in Europe. Under the current rules governing the collection and treatment of WEEE, some processors are able to skirt regulations, keep material off the books, or improperly export scrap. The organizations propose a new registry to track all WEEE collected, shipped and processed between countries.
The recommendations are intended to influence the WEEE Recast Directive, which among other things, raises the target recycling rate to either 65 percent of the equipment sold in the past three years, or 85 percent or all WEEE generated beginning in 2019, and implements new export restrictions. Currently, most collection rates hover around 30 percent for European countries. Member states have until January 2014 to update their laws to come into compliance with the directive.
