E-Scrap News Magazine: Forecast points to continued erosion of PC market

## Forecast points to continued erosion of PC market

_By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling_

Global PC shipments are expected to shrink 1.3 percent this year, according to [new numbers](http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS23987313#.UTYXdqKG01Y) from market research firm IDC.

This forecast comes on the heels of a poor year for PC makers, with shipments of new units declining 3.7 percent in 2012 versus the previous year. PC shipments (both desktops and laptops) are expected to fall to 345 million units, from 350 million units last year, which would make for the third consecutive year of declining shipments in mature markets. The tepid consumer reception to Microsoft Windows 8, as well as constrained component supplies and continued growth of tablets and mobile devices are cited as the primary cause of the contracting market.

By contrast, vendors will ship 918.6 million smartphones this year – half of all mobile phone shipments in the world.
