## Waste Management releases sustainability report

Waste Management has released its most recent sustainability report, detailing steps the company has taken to be more environmentally conscious, including what it's doing to meet its recycling goals.
"Our recycling business prospered in 2011," reads a message from David Steiner, the company's CEO, that opens Waste Management's most recent [sustainability report](https://www.wm.com/sustainability/index.jsp). "Although volatility in the commodity markets has continued into 2012, we have seen an expansion in revenue from our recycling operations."
Despite periodic dips in prices for recyclable commodities, one of which [the company saw last quarter](http://resource-recycling.com/node/3207), Waste Management expanded its recycling capacity by 1 million tons in 2011, and is seeking to extract more material at transfer and disposal facilities.
In 2011, the waste and recycling colossus handled nearly 13 million tons of recyclables, putting it almost two-thirds of the way to reaching its goal of recycling 20 million tons of material by 2020.
The report also notes that Waste Management sees single-stream recycling as a way to boost recovery rates in the U.S.
"Curbside recycling is the backbone of residential recycling, and it is evolving," reads the report. "We believe that we can continue to make recycling easier, more efficient and more productive. Single-stream recycling, where all recyclables are mixed together in one collection bin, is one way to improve recycling rates."
