Resource Recycling Magazine: Refillable bottle era comes to an end

## Refillable bottle era comes to an end

_By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling_

A relic from a bygone era will soon vanish as the last company packaging Coca-Cola in returnable glass bottles will cease using the once-ubiquitous containers.

After 80 years of using the bottles, the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Winona, Minnesota will stop using the returnable 6.5 ounce bottles of Coke because the necessary upgrades to continue to fill the containers are no longer feasible, reports television station [_WKYC_](http://www.wkyc.com/news/article/264739/45/Final-Coca-Cola-glass-bottle-produced-in-Minnesota).

"This is a very historic day," Phillip Mooney, chief archivist and Heritage Vice President of Coca-Cola, told the television station. "For some 40 years, from 1915 to 1955, the only way you could have had a Coca-Cola was in one of these embossed glass bottles. This really marks the end of an era for us."

The last 6,000 bottles will be sold in the Winona area to help finance improvements to bicycle and pedestrian paths, according to the television station. The final bottle will go to the World of Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta, Georgia.
