## OEMs wait for new Windows
_By Editorial Staff, Resource Recycling_
Worldwide PC shipments continued their decline in the third quarter of 2012, sliding approximately eight percent compared to the same period last year.
Market research firm [Gartner](http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=2194017) estimated worldwide shipments totaled 87.5 million units between July and September of this year, representing a year-over-year decline of 8.3 percent. Corroborating these findings was [International Data Corp.](http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS23730212), which estimated a YOY decline of 8.6 percent. Both companies again cited the impending launch of Windows 8, which is due to be released commercially on Oct. 25, as the primary reason for the slowdown in purchases, with many OEMs and retailers clearing inventory and allocating resources to new, Windows 8-optimized units.
More revealing in Gartner's and IDC's latest numbers was the shakeup in relative market share among the leading OEMs. Three of the top five PC makers (HP, Dell and Acer) saw double-digit declines in YOY growth in Q3 2012, to the benefit of both Lenovo and Asus. In fact, by Gartner's estimation, Lenovo narrowly beat out HP to become the top OEM in the world, capturing 15.7 percent of the market, compared to 15.5 percent for HP. Dell remained third in worldwide shipments with 10.5 percent. Domestically, Lenovo was also the only major OEM to see positive year-over-year growth, beating even Apple, which saw a 6.1 percent drop in Mac sales in Q3 2012, compared to the same period last year.
