**Hewlett-Packard's** new ElitePad 900 Windows 8 **tablet is designed to be repairable and refurbishable**, with the screen, battery and some circuit boards [designed to be replaceable](http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9231887/HP_39_s_new_ElitePad_900_tablet_enables_easy_disassembly_self_support). This stands in sharp contrast with the Apple iPad -- and most other tablets, for that matter -- which are highly integrated and not designed for repair and refurbishment. The enterprise-focused tablet is scheduled to hit store shelves this January.
A new toxicology study has **ranked 36 different cell phones on their hazardous materials use**. Conducted by the Ann Arbor-based Ecology Center and iFixit.com, the [study](http://www.healthystuff.org/) found that the Motorola Citrus, iPhone 4S and LG Remarq were the least toxic phones, with the iPhone 5 ranking 5th overall and the Samsung Galaxy SIII ranking 9th. The most toxic phone was the iPhone 2G. All phones analyzed contained either lead, bromine, chlorine, mercury or cadmium, however.
**Verizon says it has diverted over 1 million pounds of electronic waste** through series of 35 [recycling rallies](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5EZG_1WPVo) held across the U.S. since 2009. The sponsored collection events take back computers, televisions and mobile devices, and will continue as Verizon works toward its goal of diverting an addition 1 million pounds by 2015.
The **global e-scrap recycling and reuse market is expected to grow** from $9.8 billion annually in 2012, **to $18.2 billion** by 2017, according to a new report from Transparency Market Research.
