## European recycling firms raided

The European Commission announced that it conducted raids on a number of lead recycling companies in a several European Union countries on Sept. 26 as part of an investigation into "suspected cartel practices," according to a report from [_Reuters_](http://www.cnbc.com/id/49221624).
Neither the nations nor the companies were named, but the EC said had all been buying old batteries and scrap lead for recycling.
"The Commission has reasons to believe that the companies concerned may have violated Article 101 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU), which prohibits cartels and restrictive business practices," a press release from the Commission noted.
The Commission further said that the "unannounced inspections are a preliminary step in investigations into suspected cartels. The fact that the Commission carries out such inspections does not mean that the companies are guilty of anti-competitive behavior nor does it prejudge the outcome of the investigation itself."
