E-Scrap News Magazine: OEMs lead the charge for household battery recycling

## OEMs lead the charge for household battery recycling

_By Henry Leineweber, Resource Recycling_

The four largest household battery manufacturers are searching for an organization to develop and manage a battery recycling program in the U.S.

Duracell, Energizer, Panasonic and Rayovac jointly formed the non-profit Corporation for Battery Recycling in 2011 -- partnering with MIT to undertake a life-cycle analysis of household consumer batteries. Based on those findings, the group has now issued a [request for proposal][1] from qualified and experienced organizations to act as a stewardship body for a national battery recycling initiative. The program will focus on collecting and recycling consumer household batteries and must be able to accommodate a variety of types and technologies, from disposable alkaline batteries, to lithium ion and rechargeable units. The life-cycle study previously conducted indicated consumers often don't make a distinction between battery technologies when depositing them for recycling.

In addition to developing a collection and material management plan, the stewardship organization will be responsible for a communication and education program to build consumer awareness and spur participation. Proposals should also include recommendations on how to continuously improve the environmental impact of batteries, as they relate to human health, ecosystem quality, global warming and resource depletion.

The Corporation for Battery Recycling hopes to launch the program by April, 2013.
